Cancer should not shatter Khalid Qadir’s dreams
A patient named Khalid Qadir at a very young and bright age was holding hundreds of dreams in his dazzling eyes like every individual. The same person now has a devastating life with cancer. Khalid was a full-of-spirit 35-year-old guy. He was working in Dubai when he suddenly got the news of being diagnosed with blood cancer.
Khalid was a pillar of the family, who was the only support for people who were dependent on him. Khalid’s hospital stays and treatment have cost a lot already. The family’s financial and emotional well-being has greatly been affected due to Khalid’s declining health. Cancer is not only eating Khalid but also his family.
Diagnosis and Challenges
Upon the diagnosis, the doctors reported that he had Lymphoma which had advanced and would require treatment right away. The patient is currently admitted to Ziauddin Hospital Karachi, Pakistan. He has been suggested for chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and other procedures that require a vast amount of money.
Currently, Pakistan has a 40% poverty rate with those employed also earning minimum wage. The cancer treatment in a good hospital can not be afforded by every individual which makes it a challenge for Khalid as well. He is from the majority and could not afford to pay the treatment cost at Ziauddin Hospital. Shifting the patient to a public hospital can be excruciating as those hospitals might not have as advanced treatment options as the one the patient is currently admitted to.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has reported in Pakistan that the proportion of newly diagnosed cancers is 0.18 million. The number of cancer fatalities is 0.11 million. This is due to a lack of advanced treatments, healthy diet and lifestyle, and funds. We don’t want Khalid to be one of those 0.11 million people.
Mental Wellbeing is Equally Important as Physical Wellbeing
The amount of fatalities due to cancer has spread fear among people to believe that every cancer patient dies. When diagnosed with cancer, most of the patients admit their mortality rather than fighting against it.
This hopelessness is due to the current situation of the country’s healthcare system, and financial downfall. Affording quality treatment is costly enough that patients are left to die rather than get treated for free. This greatly affects a patient’s physical and mental health, which in turn makes cancer cases worse.
To prevent Khalid from being affected by these barriers, it is important to get him treated at a good hospital where his physical and mental well-being is considered. To this end, ToHeal Global has started a campaign to urgently collect $15k so his treatment can start.
To Heal is a nonprofit organization working to help marginalized communities stand against healthcare barriers and inequity. The organization aims to provide underprivileged communities with open inspiration. During academic challenges, medical emergencies, and food shortages, ToHeal presents its support.
